LES BLAKEBROUGH

Untitled
Southern Ice Porcelain bowl
25cm dia x 26cm h

Les Blakebrough was born in England, arriving here age 18 to help pioneer contemporary Australian crafts. By 1963 he had studied in Kyoto with the Japanese ceramist Takeishi and by 1970 was representing Australia at world craft council conferences abroad. Blakebrough's subsequent career has been exemplary; he has held a major teaching role at the University of Tasmania and developed the ceramic research unit. He has also developed a porcelain body called Southern Ice, which is the whitest to be found in Australia if not the world. Les is our national treasure, he has had many solo exhibitions throughout Australia and Japan. Collectors seek out his beautiful pieces; the bowl in this auction is a fine example of his work.
