Sustainable schools reap the rewards

Albeura Street Primary, Goodwood Primary and New Town High schools are the 2011 Southern schools winners of the Alcorso Foundation' and Keep Australia Beautiful's AuSSI-Tas Sustainable Schools Achievement Awards.  North and North West winners are Beaconsfield Primary, Hillcrest Primary and Ulverstone High.

The Alcorso Foundation and Keep Australian Beautiful partnered in the 2011 awards presenting each school with $1000 towards further sustainable infrastructure and planning.  Their award highlights and rewards each school's 'whote of school' commitment to sustainable practice.

AuSSI-Tas is the Tasmanian branch of the Australian Sustainable Schools Initiative, a partnership of the Australian Government and the states.  This successful program aims to improve schools' management of resources and grounds, including energy, waste, water, biodiversity, landscape design, products and materials, and integrates this approach into the existing curriculum and daily running of the school.

The six schools that have won this year are all outstanding examples of sustainability in action and provide excellent example to other schools to follow.  The 2011 Alcorso Foundation/Keep Australia Beautiful AuSSI-Tas Sustainable Schools Achievement Awards were presented at the 2011 Kids 4 Kids Conference held at the Stanley Burbury Theatre in Hobart on 15 and 16 November, and at Camp Banksia, Port Sorell on Friday 18 November, 2011.
